In conjunction with the School of the Environment and the Department of African American Studies, graduate students may also be admitted to a combined Ph.D. program. Applicants interested in one of these programs should note this in their online application. As with the standard Anthropology graduate program, no terminal M.A.s are offered in combined degree programs. Click on the links below for additional information.
The Combined PhD curriculum in African American Studies and Anthropology—revised and updated in 2020—includes introductory coursework in both departments followed by qualifying exams and a dissertation prospectus process that encourage students to creatively combine these fields in ways that support their own emerging scholarship. See the Graduate Studies Handbook and the Department of African American Studies website for more detail.
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Bulletin also contains information on combined degree programs.
