Dr. Richard Burger’s study demonstrates Machu Picchu older than believed

August 11, 2021

New radiocarbon dates on human remains from Machu Picchu, push the founding of the iconic royal Inca retreat back minimally 20 years, from 1440 to 1420. Samples of 26 individuals recovered from four cemeteries during Yale’s 1912 Machu Picchu excavations were subject to accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). These new data, published in Antiquity, challenge our accepted chronology of the Inca which have been largely based on Spanish Conquistador accounts. In August, 2021, Richard Burger and Lucy Salazar were recognized as Persons of Eminence by the District of San Sebastian, Peru, for their contributions to the cultural patrimony of Cuzco.
