Chimpanzees and bonobos, both members of the genus Pan, are similar in many aspects of their morphology, ecology, and behavior. Yet, despite these similarities, there is striking variation, both within and between species. Elucidating the forces responsible for shaping these lineages is critical, not only for a better understanding of our closest living relatives, but also for insights into the evolution in our own lineage. In this talk, I discuss our ongoing work attempting to unravel the complex evolutionary history of this genus, starting from the initial divergence of these species nearly two million years ago and continuing through the present.
