Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, is now a major center of tourism for Andean South America. Over a million travelers a year stop in Cuzco to visit the ruins there or as a stop in their journey to Machu Picchu. How is Inca culture and society presented to these visitors? This talk will examine the four museums in Cuzco devoted to Cusco's past and consider how and why they differ from each other. The contrasting narratives that they present reflect the differing goals and sponsors of these institutions, as well as their target audiences.
