The purpose of the talk is to familiarize listeners with the history, human biology and health of the Samoan people, focusing on the two polities in the archipelago. Bioanthropology research among Samoans over the last 50 years of research has emphasized their biological and health responses to economic modernization and nutritional transitions. The role of recent, ongoing and potential genetic studies will be highlighted along with considerations of the ethical implications.
