Excavations in the highlands of Peru

PhD candidate Sarah Joy Martini published an article on excavations she led at the site of Cerro La Plaza de Portachuelo de Culucán in the highlands far northern Peru together with her team of collaborators in Arqueología y SociedadThe article presents preliminary understandings of the chronology of site formation and occupation during the 3rd/4th through 7th centuries CE. This includes the first radiocarbon dates belonging to this period in this area of the Central Andes. The multi-component site, composed of a public sector with large mounds on a man-made platform and a cemetery with pit and boot-shaped tombs contains intriguing evidence of past social connections to north (Ecuador), south (central Peru), and west to the coastal plains of Piura.
